Utah's new generation of renters prefer amenities, social community living
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Spas, high-end gyms and movie theaters. These are just some of the amenities being offered to Utah renters as more and more apartment communities open up across the state.
One of the newest communities being built in Utah County – Utah City in Vineyard – is a reflection of how renters aren’t just looking for a place to live anymore, but an entire community experience.
Surveys show that apartment renters tend to lean towards places that create communities, where shops, restaurants and entertainment are just steps away.
“I’m all about convenience,” said Olivia Lindsley, a resident of Utah City. “I love that the grocery store is right down the street. I walk to it – to the gym that’s close by.”
Lindsley moved into an apartment building in the heart of the new Utah City development. The 700-acre property in Vineyard is still under development, but will soon be a walkable community featuring new restaurants, a racketball club, and lots of green space.
“I’ve been in other places and Vinyard for a good amount of time, and I really wanted somewhere that had a good gym so that I didn’t have to drive,” said Lindsley, explaining why she chose Utah City over other places to live.
Utah City marketing director Jacklynn Briggs said when it comes to amenities here, they are thought out.
“We really think about it as basic infrastructure for lifestyle,” she said.
Multiple reports show that Gen Z, the highest population of renters, is playing a role in shaping the way these communities look. Filling them with things like wellness and community spaces.
“These kinds of things we know make people’s lives better because they have easy access to them and the proximity, steps from their door, makes it so they actually use them,” Briggs said.
Briggs said there are some costs that are factored into the space.
“That’s another way we are thinking about affordability,” she said. “If you live somewhere and you’re also having to get into your car, go pay for a separate gym that may cost you hundreds of dollars a month.”
She added that in Utah City, professionals don’t need to pay for workspaces and drive to parks.
With an average monthly rent payment of $1600 that includes amenities, Briggs said costs level out.
“When we think about the global perspective of our amenities,” said Briggs. “They really help reduce the expense for residents who live here.”
Lindsley said she sees herself living here for a long time as the community grows.
“It’s just so fun to be part of something that is not as traditional as Utah County is,” said Lindsley.
